Altered was a unique project that brought contemporary art to church buildings across rural Lincolnshire. A partnership between the Diocese of Lincoln, University of Lincoln and artsNK, Altered challenged audiences to view ancient church buildings through the prism of contemporary art, and sought to inspire Lincolnshire Church communities to develop new partnerships and collaborations with artists.
From its inception in 2012 the project commissioned 8 new site-specific work for the churches of St Andrew, Heckington, St Peter, South Somercotes, St Andrew in Leasingham, St James, Dry Doddington, St Peter and St Paul’s, Caistor and St John the Baptist’s, Colsterworth, from artists including Pat van Boeckel, Emily Tracy, Gary Woods and Rhubarb Theatre with Brickbeat Recording Studios, William Lindley, Trope Design, Davy and Kristin McGuire, and Lynn Dennison and Gen Doy.
During May 2015 The Altered Festival bought a variety of contemporary artworks to several of Lincolnshire’s parish churches. The project was funded by Arts Council England and Lincolnshire County Council.
