Mosaic artist Alan Potter is set to return to North Kesteven to take on an exciting new commission for Sleaford leisure Centre. Alan first came to the area to take on the Billinghay Millennium mosaic, teaching residents the skills necessary to create a spectacular mural. He then went on to inspire and teach hundreds en- route to creating new pieces for Branston, Washingborough, Nocton and then three commissioned floor panels for Sleaford.

Alan’s new piece is to go in the refurbished entrance to the centre and celebrates the towns connection to the river Slea, its Roman past and the communities links to the new swimming pool.

Alan will be undertaking a weeks residency in Sleaford to provide opportunity for people to take part, and maybe bringing together some of the many mosaicers that have already worked with him to make their mark in this spectacular new artwork.

Two of Lincolnshire’s rural churches will be transformed by contemporary art installations, which will see internationally renowned artists make their mark upon the county.

Dutch documentary filmmaker, director and video artist, Pat Van Boeckel, and award-winning visual artist from London, Emily Tracy, have been commissioned to produce interactive new art work for St. Andrews Church, Heckington. Homegrown Rhubarb Theatre and Brickbeat Studios will also create a dramatic community production for St Peter’s Church in South Somercotes, Lincolnshire.

The new commissions are the latest in a series of contemporary artworks created as part of the ‘Altered’ arts in churches programme – a pioneering partnership initiative between the University of Lincoln’s College of Arts, artsNK, The Diocese of Lincoln and the Churches Conservation Trust.

Pat Van Boekel’s distinctive installation, entitled ‘Entering a New World’, is designed to bring the church to life by reconnecting with its community outside. Van Boekel’s video concept will encourage visitors to explore the church as an inspiring historic space, and will project a thought-provoking sequence of films and moving imagery onto the font, choir and balcony.

‘Screen’, designed by Emily Tracy, will also inspire the community to review the church through an immersive experience. The artist will recreate the pre-reformation screen separating the nave and the chancel, bringing back a lost aspect of the church’s architecture and visitor experience. The screen will incorporate the shadows and silhouettes of the church’s visitors, making them an intrinsic part of the installation.

The commissions are accompanied by a range of community engagement opportunities provided by the artists. Free and open workshop details are available online www.artsnk.org/whats-on/altered-free-workshops-st-andrews-church-heckington-april-may-2013

Emily will host a rare public talk alongside her father, renowned art historian, Charles Tracy B.A. Ph.D FSA. On Saturday 27th April from 1:30pm to 3:30pm, they will provide an exclusive preview of Emily’s artwork, and invite the local community to explore the architecture of the 14th century parish church, exposing the legends behind the church furnishings central to her display.

The duo of site specific public art installations will then be on show at St. Andrews Church in Heckington on Saturday 4th-Sunday 5th and Saturday 11th-Sunday 12th May respectively. http://www.artsnk.org/whats-on/altered-two-inspirational-exhibitions-st-andrews-church-heckington-may-2013/

Lincolnshire’s Rhubarb Theatre in collaboration with Brickbeat Studios have also been selected to create an innovative community-focused production at St Peter’s Church inSouth Somercotes, entitled ‘The Queen of the Marsh’. The company will host a series of dramatic development workshops throughout April and May, creating an audio and visual journey of discovery through the history, myths and legends of the Somercotes district.

The group’s work will then be brought to life through dynamic live theatre events within the church on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May, when the whole community is invited to enjoy audio, visual and shadow puppet performances, while joining a picnic to celebrate ‘The Queen of the Marsh’.

Chris Heighton, Arts Partnership Development Manager at the Universityof Lincoln, explained: “’Altered’ sets out to challenge arts audiences and visitors to view the county’s historic churches in new ways through the prism of contemporary art.

“These new commissions explore and re-tell the many stories and legends deep within Lincolnshire’s churches. They have been specifically designed and selected to capture imaginations and inspire meaningful and on-going collaborations between rural churches, artists and audiences.”

Ben Stoker, Church Development Officer for the Diocese of Lincoln, said: ‘Lincolnshire’s churches are wonders of art, architecture and faith. This project will encourage visitors to view these magnificent buildings afresh, thanks to artistic interventions of the highest quality. Each artist who has been commissioned to create work for ‘Altered’ has done so in direct response to the church building in which their work will be exhibited. This means that each exhibition is a unique collaboration between historic church and contemporary artist, resulting in new, exciting experiences in Lincolnshire’s ancient church buildings.’

‘Altered’ has been funded by Arts Council England and Lincolnshire County Council to provide more people with an opportunity to experience great art and develop an arts programme that can improve the quality of life and local economy in the county.

‘The Queen of the Marsh’:

‘The Queen of the Marsh’ project has been devised by Kirsty Mead from Rhubarb Theatre and Maurice Mulligan from BrickBeat Recording Studios. Their workshops are open to anyone, of any age, who is keen to take part: For further information click on link http://www.artsnk.org/whats-on/altered-project-the-queen-of-the-marsh-south-somercotes/
