artsNK youth dance company redXco are celebrating this week after being announced as the winners of dance competition True Motion, which took place at Lincoln Performing Arts Centre on Saturday.
The Hip Hop group competed against 15 other youth dance groups of all genres from across Lincolnshire, with outstanding performances demonstrating the wealth of young dance talent in the county. The event is part of U. Dance, a national annual dance platform run by One Dance UK, which celebrates and showcases the best youth dance from across the country, giving young dancers the opportunity to perform on stage.
redXco were delighted to win the competition for the third year running after impressing the judging panel of industry experts with a routine that explored through movement the development of mental health issues amongst young people – a topic which is very much in the news at the moment. Choreographer Andrew Williams set the theme, taking inspiration from Avant Garde Dance Company who carried out a residency with the group in 2016. redXco’s accomplished performance delved into the stigmas and realities of a young person coping with mental health problems.
As winners of the county platform, redXco will now have the opportunity to work with prestigious choreographer Theo Clinkard at elEMents Choreo Lab, organised by Dance4, on Sunday 30 April in Nottingham. The group will join five other county winners at the day which will explore choreographic skills, techniques and practices.
redXco will find out in the next couple of weeks, whether they will be selected to perform at the U.Dance National Festival which takes place in Birmingham in July.
Amy Dalton, Dance Development Manager at artNK commented:
“We are delighted that redXco have won True Motion for the third year running. The standard of competition at the annual event was particularly high this year, but redXco have once again worked really hard in rehearsals to perfect their routine. They are all looking forward to taking part in the choreography lab which will be an excellent opportunity to progress their skills further. It is an exciting time for redXco as they are also competing in London on Saturday 11th March, at the Move It & Capezio Dance Championships.”
redXco train weekly at OneNK (North Kesteven Centre), in North Hykeham, Lincoln.
Entry to the group is by audition only, but artsNK also run a variety of youth dance classes open to all levels of experience, as well as Aerial fitness classes for both adults and young people. For more information visit our dance classes page.
