Lincolnshire School Games get started Carnival style!

14th July 2016

Over 300 primary school children from across Lincolnshire were involved in a Caribbean Carnival Style opening of the Lincolnshire school games last week.

We partnered with emccan ( East Midlands Caribbean Carnival Arts Network) to work with 8 primary schools, creating fabulous headdresses and teaching them a Brazilian Dance Motif to perform in an opening parade for the Lincolnshire School Games Summer Festival in Grantham, inspired by Rio 2016.

Carnival queen Karis Betts took centre stage with an award winning 15ft high costume, leading a parade with other Carnival performers and dancers followed by all the children who took part in the workshops to get the Summer School Games Festival off to an exhilarating start!

The Lincolnshire School Games is a twice yearly event, supported by Lincolnshire Sport and the Schools Sports Partnerships of Lincolnshire, which aims to motivate and inspire young people across the country to take part in competitive school sport. The cultural component of the schools games festivals is organised by artsNK, who worked with emccan (East Midlands Caribbean Carnival Arts Network) to organise a series of Carnival dance and head dress making workshops.

The workshops formed part of emccan’s Arts Council England funded “Flight of Fantasy” Tour which aims to engage culturally diverse artists to share their skills and experiences with audiences in rural areas, seaside towns and large scale events.

Amy Dalton, Head of Dance Development at artsNK said

“We were very pleased to include Carnival arts, in partnership with emccan, in the 2016 Summer Festival. artsNK’s ethos is to take great art out to people across Lincolnshire and this project was a perfect way of engaging young people in an art form that is both diverse and enriching. We hope this fantastic project will be the start of a new partnership that will continue to grow over the coming years.”

Schools who took part were:

Winchelsea Primary School, Ruskington / Ling Moor Primary School, North Hykeham / Friskney C of E Primary School, Boston / Billingborough Primary School /Leadenham C of E Primary School/ North Kesteven Hartsholme Academy, Lincoln Kirkby la Thorpe C of E Primary Academy/Leslie Manser Primary School, Lincoln
