artsNK’s Aerial Dance classes will be re-launched following October half term in a brand new dance studio at NK Centre (soon to be OneNK) in North Hykeham.
The classes have already proved popular with young people and adults alike and the new studio space, part of a £3.6 million refurbishment of of NK Centre, will allow for more classes to be offered within improved facilities.
The sessions, which are run by our dance team, teach ‘dance in the air’, using a special aerial rig, with silk and hoops. Participants learn new techniques on silks and hoop equipment which improves physical fitness, strength and flexibility (the ‘silks’ are two long pieces of fabric which you wrap around yourself whilst you create striking poses in the air).
The classes work out the entire body, improving strength, core and flexibility. They are great for building confidence too, as well as being fun and a very different challenge from your average workout or fitness class! Although growing in popularity as a form of professional dance, it is a rare opportunity for beginners to be able to make use of the specialist equipment outside of London.
There will be two classes offered for adults, Aerial Dance Fitness class, which uses silk and hoop equipment, and Aerial Stretch and Flex which is based around yoga, pilates and aerial techniques, using aerial hammocks to support the body. There is also a Stretch and Flex class for young people aged 11 – 16 years.
For those thinking of taking part but not sure look out for information about taster sessions which will be held at the end of October, or come along to the Wellbeing day in Waddington where the dance team will be bringing the Aerial rig along.
