Eleven year old Tally has been attending the inclusive dance sessions at One NK since they began in Autumn 2016.
About the programme: artsNK’s inclusive dance classes provide young people (aged 8 – 18) with disabilities with an opportunity to enjoy moving to music in a fun and safe environment, allowing them to feel more empowered within their communities and enjoy an increased level of wellbeing. Classes take place at One NK, North Hykeham, Yarborough Leisure Centre, Lincoln, Castle Sports Complex, Spalding and Geoff Moulder Leisure Centre, Boston. The sessions are open to all with learning and physical disabilities, and cover a variety of styles, genres and movement explorations to encourage and develop co-ordination, mobility and fun.
The project is run in partnership with Transported and funded through a grant from Lincolnshire County Council’s Short Break Scheme.
She now also attends the Lincoln sessions as well. We spoke to Tally’s parents about the sessions:
Why did you decide to come along?
Since Tally is in mainstream school she doesn’t get to mix with other children with disabilities so thought this would be a positive thing. She really loves dance and music so this ticked all the boxes.
How has attending the group benefitted Tally?
The classes have built up her stamina and her confidence. It’s really nice she can do the session on her own as it promotes her independence. She likes this as generally she needs one on one when we go places, so she enjoys the chance to do something by herself, while we can pop to the café, or get things done.
What is the best thing about the group from your and Tally’s point of view?
It’s great the classes are promoting inclusion with all different disabilities included. Emma is really passionate and enthusiastic and makes the children interact with each other, making sure everyone is included. The classes provide a good way for her to express herself and she is also getting exercise and making new friends. She really loves the sessions, they are the highlight of her week and she now attends the group in Lincoln as well as North Hykeham.
